Each work, in its own way, represents a milestone in the life of its composer, from the Haydnesque joie de vivre of Prokofiev%u2019s First Symphony to the unashamed lyricism of Tchaikovsky%u2019s popular piano concerto. Elgar%u2019s much‐loved %u2018enigmatic%u2019 orchestral portraits of his friends, which similarly represented a major break‐through for the composer, include the intensely moving and quintessentially Elgarian 'Nimrod'.
