Volksoper Vienna: Mozart

演出简介

Originally I wanted to work on an Italian opera by Mozart, because this language is more 'anonymous' in our circles and comes more easily to song than German. However, in the end I chose 'The Magic Flute' because for me this work contains the most beautiful arias Mozart ever wrote. The musical themes are so strong, with such a high recognition value that one can simply try everything, from rhythm und modus changes up to independent phrasings of the melodies by (musical) re‐working. The idea to melt E‐and U‐music came into being after the success which our band had with a jazz treatment of an aria from Bizet's 'Carmen' at the International Orchestra Competition in Paris in June, 1990. We won first prize. Bizet, however, is a romantic and 'Carmen' plays in Andalusia. The existing material sounds Spanish and hence, is extremely well suited for Ethno jazz. The music of Mozart, on the other hand, is at the summit of classicism and tonal music, a climax in the history of music concerned with symmetry in construction and very foreign to jazz, which is subjected to quite other musical, almost ethical laws. The easy major key‐3-sound, a perfect example for the whole Mozart's repertoire, is considered in jazz music as a style break. But it was exactly this ostensibly impossible connection between Mozart and jazz which made the challenge even more exciting and it soon turned out to be absolutely achievable if one applied the right means.
