The Golden Dragon at Semperoper, Dresden

演出简介

Experience the full spectrum of human emotion, set amid the microcosm of a Thai‐Chinese‐Vietnamese restaurant, to be found in any Western town or city. Peter Eötvös sets Roland Schimmelpfennig's play of the same name to music, without compromising the work's combination of absurdist comedy and searching social commentary.

Petr Popelka conducts the opera's Dresden premiere, in a new production by Barbora Horáková Joly at the Semperoper's studio space 'Semper Zwei'. A multi‐talented cast play multiple roles, switching genders, races, ages at the flick of a switch — perhaps a reminder that 'everyman' is within each of us.

As the restaurant fills with happy customers and regular visitors, in the kitchen, things aren't quite so cheerful. One young man, lacking the residence permit that would allow him to visit the dentist for his aching tooth, resorts to cruder dentistry. The owner's daughter meanwhile encounters the rough treatment that a dangerous cocktail of drunkenness, prejudice and entitlement can engender.

Performed in German.
