When the French composer Philippe Hersant wrote music on French prison texts, Teodor Currentzis was so impressed by the result that he asked the artist to also set Russian gulag poems to music. The result was 'Tristia' — a work of existential force that immediately grips the listener, thanks to the rich, tonal music that picks up and unites Russian and French traditions.
