About the Composer
The name' Bach' and the word 'musician' have long been synonymous in Germany — no fewer than 56 musicians of standing sprang from this prolific family. However, Johann Sebastian Bach, a genius composer and virtuoso organist, was the one to confer immortality on the family name. Born in March 1685 in Eisenach, a small town in Thuringia, Bach was oprhaned at the age of ten, and was subsequently raised by his elder brother Johann Christoph, an organist in a neighbouring town. Initially taught by his brother, young Johann Sebastian later moved to Luneburg, where he attended a church school and mastered the techniques of playing violin, viola, harpsichord and organ, as well as choral singing, by the age of 17.
In 1703 Bach was hired as a court musician to the Duke of Weimar, earning a reputation that secured a post in Arnstadt as organist at the New Church. Several further positions followed, until in 1723 Bach moved to Leipzig to be a cantor at St. Thomas Church. Remaining in Leipzig until his death of a stroke in 1750, in the year of his death Bach underwent unsuccessful eye surgery, leading to the loss of his eyesight. His second wife consequently helped him to write his last works. Bach’s artistic legacy is vast, including oratorios, cantatas, masses, motets, music for organ, piano, violin, and numerous other solo instruments. Bach's 'Art of the Fugue' is central to the evolution of the Western Classical music canon.
