Capturing the sea in its many moods, Debussy's La Mer has been a popular feature of concert programs since its premiere. Ravel's dramatically Romantic, unexpected La Valse enjoys similar popularity, with many critics seeing the work as a metaphor for a changing world, as the nineteenth century bled into the twentieth. Poulenc's suite Les Biches or 'The Does' is less familiar, but this Watteau‐inspired ballet music is replete with barely‐concealed coquetry and lascivious indulgence.
