Marvel at what a genius can achieve in fourteen days… Not only does Handel's first London opera contain numerous 'hit' arias, but also the arresting stage direction 'Armida enters in a chariot drawn by dragons'!
Fortunately, said dragons did not burn down the theater, and the work enjoyed a great success — perhaps the greatest of Handel's lifetime. Drawing on a medieval Crusade legend, the opera traces the story of the warrior‐hero Rinaldo, his beloved Almirena, and the sorceress‐queen Armida.
Christophe Rousset and the Kammerorchesterbasel are joined in this concert performance by the crème de la crème of Baroque talent, with a cast including Jason Bridges, Sandrine Piau and Xavier Sabata.
