Matthias Goerne performs music of Bach with the Basel Chamber Orchestra this holiday season in Budapest.

There are not many performers as at home in German choral music as Matthias Goerne, born in Weimar in 1967. What is more, the baritone's unique style unites several types of artist, for he is at once a concert artist, an opera singer and an exponent of Lieder. His past performances have demonstrated that he is comfortable with the music of Schubert, Wagner and Bach, while he is unsurpassed in the title role of Alban Berg's Wozzeck and as Papageno in The Magic Flute, the songs of Beethoven, Hugo Wolf and Mahler, and Mendelssohn's oratorios. He learned from the best, as it was Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer‐Dieskau, the two great German singers of the 20th century, who passed on their secrets.
