As the most successful composer of his time, Gioachino Rossini’s path inevitably led to Baden‐Baden. It was here that he sat at the gambling table, ate copiously and well, and performed his Stabat Mater in 1842. During this period, prevailing tastes were no longer well‐disposed toward his comedies – suddenly it was not Italian humor, but German feeling that was in demand. A generous dose of the latter can be heard in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, the most Romantic of his comic operas. Yet this Cinderella, which will be performed with Cecilia Bartoli here in Baden‐Baden, eschews false sentiment, placing the emphasis instead on eroticism and wit. Bartoli’s early CD recording of this work has long been a classic. Now the artist is appearing in a semi‐staged production with Les Musiciens du Prince‐Monaco, an orchestra she founded in order to realize her musical visions.
