Borodin Quartet: Tchaikovsky, Wolf, Haydn

演出简介

Relax in the assurance of a memorable evening. The Borodin Quartet — one of the world's longest‐established, and most highly acclaimed string ensembles — plays a program with a suitably Russian theme.

Dedicated to Grand Duke Paul of Russia, and premiered at his wife's Viennese apartment, Haydn's Opus 33 quartets are frequently called the 'Russian' quartets, though they are definitively western in both form and content. Tchaikovsky's first Quartet is richly Russian, particularly in the melancholy Andante second movement, based on a folk tune the composer heard whistled by a laborer when visiting his sister. Wolf's 'Italian Serenade' also draws on a traditional tune for inspiration, but to very different effect — the work's insouciant optimism vividly captures the popular conception of the Italian national character.
