'Armide' is the last and some say the best of the cooperations between Jean‐Baptiste Lully and librettist Phillippe Quinault.

For this opera Quinault used Torquato Tasso's epos 'La Gerusalemme liberata.'
Armide, niece of the king of Damascus, successfully uses her magical powers to fight the crusaders who threaten her country. Against her she falls in love with one of the crusaders. She manages to ensnare him for a time, until his friends rescue him. Desperate and humiliated Armide destroys her palace and vanishes into the air on a chariot.
