Complesso Monumentale Donnaregina

Naples, 意大利

The church of Santa Maria Donnaregina Vecchia is a monumental church in Naples built in the early fourteenth century for the Poor Clares nuns of the convent of the same name.

The church is located behind Santa Maria Donnaregina Nuova, the latter built in the seventeenth century with the aim of replacing the old one, with which since 2007 it has been part of the circuit of the Diocesan Museum of Naples.

Along the walls of the choir of nuns is preserved the largest and one of the most important cycles of frescoes of the fourteenth century in Naples. the monumental complex of Donnaregina is unique in the panorama of the historic center of Naples where the oldest buildings have been transformed by the redundant Baroque decoration that, after the Council of Trent, invaded with marble inlays, walls and floors to the detriment of previous paintings.

In this Franciscan monastic insula, on the other hand, are preserved testimonies of the ancient convent and of the two original churches, the medieval and the seventeenth century, conceived, until the thirties of the twentieth century, as a single structure with a corridor that, like a sort of umbilical cord, joined in addition to the apses, past and present, allowing the Poor Clares to move without leaving the places of seclusion.

Today, through the original architecture and decorations, we can find rare examples of the history of Neapolitan art and the Franciscan order.

The complex is the perfect place to get lost in the magic of Italian music in the center of Naples.
