Denis Matsuev, piano: Liszt! In Every Respect

О событии

The Danse Macabre, Liszt's “third piano concerto,” drags the audience downwards – and the pianist must also plumb the depths of hell to perform with any degree of authenticity the terrifying effects that fill this paraphrase of the Dies irae melody.

He must be affected by the music in the same way that the enormous fresco Triumph of Death by 14th century painter Buffalmacco overcame Liszt on his travels to Pisa. The two genuine piano concertos on the programme are unusual for Liszt works: the movements follow one another without pause and are given cohesion by motifs repeated in several variations across this major work.

The Russian piano virtuoso, Denis Matsuev, will be supported in this performance of outstanding stamina and technical proficiency by the Danubia Orchestra Óbuda, founded by Domonkos Héja.
