Fado Magic: Vilnius Festival 2011

О событии

Enjoy a wonderful Fado evening with Cristina Branco at the Vilnius Festival 2011!

“Let’s imagine that Fado Tango is a journey from Buenos Aires to Lisbon and Paris, and on that course from the poverty to luxury one can experience anything: disappointment, failure, suffering and love, but the most important – saudade – an untranslatable word embracing the strongest, noblest and most beautiful feelings.”

This is how Cristina Branco puts the secrets of fado and tango into words. On June 7th she and her friends will visit the Vilnius Festival on their Fado Tango Tour and fill the National Philharmonic Hall with saudade – a plethora of incandescent emotions. Cristina Branco is part of a younger generation of Portuguese singers that rediscovered and transformed traditional fado songs. Her new album Fado Tango celebrates traditional fado and mixes this great Portuguese tradition with similar traditions of urban songs from Europe and Latin America often born within the immigrant communities of harbour towns.

In this music the players’ fingers twist like dancers’ legs, whirling all night long without respite. It is said that once upon a time fado was a dance. Like tango, it is the music of the poor, nutcases and rioters, but most importantly, the ones who have a big soul.

Founded in 1997, the annual Vilnius Festival is one of the most prestigious, solid and versatile musical events in Lithuania. With primary interest in presenting classical music, performed by the established soloists, ensembles and symphony orchestras from all over the world, it also promotes contemporary Lithuanian music by commissioning new large‐scale works, and offers a platform for jazz and musical theatre.
