The Triumph of Music and Art in the Papal Rome

О событии

In the beautiful Hall of the complex of S. Luigi dei Francesi, the Schola Romana Ensemble offers a unique opportunity to hear the early Roman liturgical music that once filled Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

While the ensemble performs music by primarily Roman composers like Carissimi, Benevoli, and Pitoni, you will be led on the journey through the aisles of the Church St. Luigi dei Francesi and introduced to the masterpieces of Caravaggio, Domenichino, and other important artists. The music will then accompany you to the Contarelli Chapel, where the paintings of Caravaggio are preserved.

The stormy life of Michelangelo Merisi, known as “Caravaggio” matches the drama of his extraordinary pictorial visions. In S. Luigi dei francesi, the artist produced some of his most famous works, inspired by the figure of St. Matthew. The music of this itinerary are those heard during the years in which Caravaggio painted these extraordinary pictures. The intense spirituality of the sounds of the period allows the listener to deeply penetrate the expressive world of this revolutionary artistic genius.

Painting and music from the transitional period between 1500 and 1600 open the rich emotional world and a full aesthetic and artistic perspective of Papal Rome.
