Faust

О событии

Philippe Fénelon's Faust (2007), inspired by Nikolaus Lenau, will be presented by the Opéra National de Paris at the Palais Garnier in Paris.

This Faust reveals a quest for Truth. Constructed as a poetic drama, the scenes from the hero's life express the tragic nature of destiny. A baroque and fragmented composition, this work of contrasts seeks to express the contradictions of human beings. It is built around Faustian themes: nature will not yield its secrets, science is vain, religion has no answers, sensual pleasure is ephemeral, family life is insipid, art provides only a semblance of satisfaction, and so on. Refusing all compromise, sceptical and disillusioned, Faust breaks with the established order to escape doubt and allows himself to be convinced by a brutal, ironic and condescending Mephistopheles that he will achieve his goal by surrendering his soul. And yet his wanderings and his visions are only the headlong flight of a cynical dream that leads him from one failure to another. It is Görg – L'Homme –, Faust's conscience, who gives him the key by showing him that the freedom we crave is within each one of us and that it is vain to seek it elsewhere. This revelation of the free man carries the rebel off towards his destruction. His painful adventures have been nothing more than a stay of execution. — Philippe Fénelon
