Ayre

О событии

Ayre is performed by the Dawn Upshaw, the Brodsky Quartet and The Andalucian Dogs; a song cycle in eleven sections that compresses the history of the Sephardic Jews into a cry from the heart that is filled with pain and poetry.

The Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov (1960) was immediately enthusiastic when the world‐famous American soprano Dawn Upshaw (1960) asked him to compose a new work especially for her. Golijov had long been contemplating a song cycle based on the Folk Songs by Luciano Berio (1925‐2003) and Upshaw was now to serve as his Muse. The Grammy Award‐winning composer went back to his Sephardic‐Romanian‐ Ukrainian roots for his eleven‐part song cycle Ayre (the old Spanish word for ‘song’ and ‘air’). The music, composed for the specially constituted ensemble The Andalucian Dogs, compresses the entire history of the Sephardic Jews into a cry from the heart, filled with pain and with poetry. In the first part of the programme Dawn Upshaw will sing Béla Bartók’s Hungarian Folk songs.

In this concert, you will enjoy the newest compositions by the contemporary Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov performed by renown artists!
