Welser‐Möst and Concertgebouw Orchestra: Widmann and Beethoven

О событии

Allow yourself to be caught up in the contrariness of Fate, of chaos and disorder, as Franz Welser‐Möst leads the RCO in Beethoven's dramatic Fifth Symphony, and Jörg Widmann's Babylon Suite.

Widmann's opera 'Babylon' had a successful premiere in Munich in 2012, and lead to the creation of this concertante version — a work that contains all the multi‐layered, multi‐lingual effects of the opera, with its attendant surface chaos and underpinning order. Beethoven's Fifth, with its 'Fate' motif, requires little introduction, but the composer's Grand Fugue is indubitably less familiar. Welser‐Möst offers his own transcription for orchestra of a work described at its premiere as 'a confusion of Babel'. Appreciation for the complex double figure has grown over the last century, and the work is now regarded as a contemporary masterpiece, composed centuries before its time.
