Jules Massenet


Jules Massenet was a French composer of the late 19th century. He influenced the Romantic era with his works of operas such as Manon 1884 and Werther 1892. However, he also composed other genres such as ballets, oratorios, orchestral works and piano pieces. In 1863r he won the top musical prize, the Prix de Rome, and became one of the leading composer of opera in France. later on in life he became a professor at the Conservatoire of Paris, like many prominent French composers of the period.

Werther


The story takes place at Wetzlar, close to Frankfurt, around 1780. Werther, a youthful artist, begins to look all starry eyed at Charlotte, the oldest girl of the bailiff. The young lady replaces her sibling's dead mother, whom she guaranteed to marry Albert, the ideal potential spouse. Bound by this guarantee, Charlotte wants to ignore her fascination in Werther. She weds Albert and makes Werther guarantee to leave until Christmas. However, the separation makes the two lowers grow more fond of each other. Werther can see no other result than death for their inconceivable love. Mortally injured by the gun he obtained from Albert, Werther dies in the arms of Charlotte, who at long last concedes her affection for him.
