The French master pianist Pierre‐Laurent Aimard plays the two most powerful piano sonatas in music history. The second sonata by the American Charles Ives is something like an answer to Beethoven's fortepiano sonata, even quoting it. In addition, Beethoven's music has a vastness, in the slow movement for instance, which must be called transcendental — and there are then also four American transcendental philosophers that Ives portrays in his sonata.
