Nabucco at Oper Leipzig

О событии

With 'Nabucco' Verdi became an opera composer in 1842. In it, Verdi captures great emotions such as love, hate and madness with impressive accuracy and exciting musical power.

The capture of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king (Nabucco, for short), sets in motion a chain of events that inevitably leads to collapse and ruin. Zaccharia, the high priest, urges the Hebrew people to continue to wait for their salvation, as he holds Nabucco's daughter and heiress, Fenena, captive. But Fenena loves Ishmaele, one of the Israelites. Abigail, the other daughter of Nabucco, also loves Ishmael and claims the throne. When he learns that she is really the daughter of a slave, he takes the crown from the now helpless Nabucco and declares himself ruler of the Babylonians. She promises to kill Fenena and the imprisoned Israelis. In extreme need, Nabucco prays to the God of the Israelites for help.

The 'Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate' choir, one of the most popular musical numbers in the history of opera, represents the liberation of an oppressed people and remains the second unofficial national anthem of the Italians. But this chorus is just one of the many emotional moments of the opera. Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, in his fourth production for the Oper Leipzig, staged this dramatic story of love and madness.
