Don Carlo at Oper Leipzig

О событии

In this, his darkest opera, Verdi creates a claustrophobic world in which love and emotion are doomed to succumb to religious fanaticism and an inflexible hierarchy. Based on the drama of the same name by Schiller, the stage director Jakob Peters‐Messer creates in this production a Kafkaesque labyrinth full of pressure that leads to an inevitable catastrophe, in which love and emotion are doomed to failure in the context of an inflexible system of power and fanatical religiosity. The final destination of love can only be death.

The Spanish infant Don Carlo is on the verge of collapse: he loves the daughter of French King Elisabeth von Valois, who for political reasons had to marry her father Philip II — the promised bride suddenly becomes Carlo's stepmother. He relies on the humanist ideas of his childhood friend, the Marquis von Posa, who beats Carlo in the fight for freedom in Flanders, oppressed by Spain. When the heir to the throne publicly rebels against his father's rigorous power politics, it becomes a scandal. Posa sacrifices himself in vain for Carlo: The king gives his son to the true ruler of the country, the Holy Inquisition.
