Vespers: Les Traversées Baroques
공연 정보
Les Traversées Baroques and Etienne Meyer perform works by Monteverdi, Mielczewski, Palestrina, and Bassano, at the Grand théâtre of the Dijon Opera.
After Prague, the Dijon Opera heads for Warsaw. Just how far did Italian music reach? While the travels of composers and musicians helped raise awareness of Italian music throughout Europe in the 18th century, it is also by the miracle of printed sheet music, which began to take off in the previous century, that scores were sent from court to court. Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine, published in 1610, was composed in the midst of the Counter‐Reformation, probably to prepare his candidature to Saint‐Marc in Venice. The Selva morale e spirituale dates from 1641 and represents the monumental culmination of the composer’s religious art.
For the past several seasons, Les Traversées Baroques and Etienne Meyer have led us on a discovery of the Polish composer Marcin Mielczewski. This time, they examine his religious music with a virtual encounter between Monteverdi and Mielczewski and an improbable service of vespers, complete with refrains, which are among the oldest elements of the liturgy and were designed to frame the psalms – a concert that juxtaposes the specificities of Polish music and the Italian attractions from which they derived.
