Rimsky‐Korsakov’s satiric opera comes to Teatro Real in a production by the successful French stage director, Laurent Pelly.
Based on Pushkin’s poem, “The Fairy Tale of the Golden Cockerel”, Rimsky‐Korsakov’s opera was a thinly veiled critique of the Russian régime and particularly of Russia’s disastrous engagement in war with Japan. The work was immediately banned, and the composer did not live to see his final opera staged.
