'카르멘'은 레퍼토리 중 가장 인기 있고 자주 공연되는 오페라 중 하나입니다. 제피렐리는 아레나 디 베로나의 웅장한 무대에 걸맞은 화려한 무대를 선사합니다.
'카르멘'은 프랑스 작곡가 조르주 비제의 4막 오페라로 프로스페르 메리미의 동명 소설을 원작으로 한 작품입니다. 오페라 희극 전통에 따라 작곡된 이 작품은 음악적 움직임 사이사이에 대사가 삽입되어 있습니다. 1875년 오페라 코미크에서 초연되었을 때, 이 획기적인 오페라는 사실주의에 익숙하지 않고 하층민의 삶을 무대에서 보여주는 데 익숙하지 않은 대중에게 큰 충격을 주었습니다. 하지만 10년 만에 비극적이고 열정적인 '카르멘'은 오페라 코미크와 급부상하는 베리스모 스타일 사이의 가교 역할을 하며 오페라 정전의 중심에 자리 잡게 됩니다.
1막
스페인 세비야. 도발적인 집시 카르멘은 담배 공장에서 일하고 있습니다. 여자들이 쉬는 시간, 카르멘은 '하바네라'를 부르며 광장의 모든 남성들의 시선을 사로잡습니다. 하지만 군인인 돈 호세만 그녀에게 관심을 보이지 않아요. 호기심이 발동한 카르멘은 일부러 그에게 꽃을 던집니다. 여자들 사이에 다툼이 벌어집니다. 카르멘은 체포되지만 호세를 유혹해 풀려나게 한 후 탈출합니다. 호세는 카르멘의 탈출을 도운 죄로 투옥됩니다.
2막
한 달 후, 막 풀려난 호세는 선술집에서 카르멘을 만나러 갑니다. 그녀의 꽃을 손에 든 호세는 그녀에게 자신의 마음을 전합니다. 카르멘은 호세에게 소집에 신고하지 말고 자신과 함께 밀수꾼에 합류하라고 설득합니다.
3막
호세는 밀수꾼에 합류한 것을 후회합니다. 카르멘은 이미 다른 남자, 투우사 에스카미요와 사랑에 빠졌기 때문입니다. 카르멘은 카드를 읽고 어두운 미래를 예감합니다.
호세의 어린 시절 친구인 미카엘라가 어머니가 중병에 걸렸다는 소식을 전하기 위해 그를 찾아옵니다. 호세는 집으로 돌아가기로 결심합니다.
다음 달, 카르멘의 연인이 된 에스카미요가 관중들의 환영을 받으며 경기장에 입장합니다. 카르멘은 광장에 남아 있고 호세가 등장합니다. 호세는 카르멘에게 함께 떠나자고 요구하지만 카르멘은 이를 거절하며 호세가 준 반지를 버립니다. 질투심에 사로잡힌 호세는 카르멘을 단도로 찔러 죽이고, 관중들이 경기장을 빠져나가자 자신의 행동을 자백합니다.
