Once the seat of Saxon electors and kings, Dresden's Royal Palace (Residenzschloss) is one of the best known tourist attractions for visitors to the city. The large inner courtyard, built between 1549 and 1552, impresses its visitors with the black and white sgraffito decorated Renaissance facade. Until the 18th century, this was the scene of pompous feasts and knights games. After extensive renovations, the courtyard now hosts impressive open air performances.
