The Estonian National Opera invites you to enjoy glamorous entertainment at a real Venetian carnival, where in the whirl of colourful costumes and fantastic masks you are bound to forget the dullness of everyday routines and wintery frost!

Waltz away to the music played by the Estonian National Opera Orchestra, conducted by Eri Klas and Mihhail Gerts, dance to the tunes of Siim Aimla Big Band or to the rhythms of DJ Elmu Sadulsepp at Colombina. The first part of the evening comprises of a music production “Carnival of Venice” made up of music associated with the City of Water performed by an Italian tenor Alessandro Luciano, the soloists, chorus and orchestra of the Estonian National Opera and the ballet soloists of the Estonian National Ballet. The carnival is lead by the favourite of all women – Casanova, impersonated by Mait Malmsten (Estonian Drama Theatre)!

The second part of the evening offers you the jazz program “La Jazz” by Villu Veski and Tiit Kalluste. The guest of the program is Sofia Rubina. Just like the magic labyrinth of streets in Venice, Estonian National Opera offers you on the very last night of the year various surprises, illusions and delightful entertainment.

Carnival of Venice

The Carnival of Venice is a grand festivity of celebrations, masquerades, balls, banquets, concerts and the commedia dell’ arte that lasts from St Stephen’s Day on December 26 until the beginning of Lent. During that period, costumes and masks were permitted (excluding the Festa delle Marie on the first Sunday of the carnival season, when 12 most beautiful maidens were chosen from among the citizens).
The Venice Carnival overturned the social order and transgressed all norms and rules of society, because wearing the mask obliterated social ranks and under the protection of the mask pranks were played on fellow citizens. As the Italians say, “A carnevale ogni scherzo vale!” (Any joke goes at the carnival). This opportunity was not missed and the city was filled night and day with celebrating crowds, wearing fantastic costumes in velvet, lace, silk and brocade. Richly decorated masks allowed the wearer to escape from everyday routines and duties into a world where he can live his fantasy.

Memoirs of Venice are shared by Casanova impersonated by Mait Malmsten.

Music associated with Venice is performed by an Italian guest tenor Alessandro Luciano, the soloists of the Estonian National Opera Juuli Lill, Janne Shevtshenko and Urmas Põldma, Estonian National Ballet and the Estonian National Opera Chorus and Orchestra.
