Lucas Passie and the Nieuw Ensemble

イベント情報

Lucas Passie and the Nieuw Ensemble present a brand‐new oratorio with its musical roots in the 8th century when Gregorian chant blended with Byzantine melody in the Eastern Roman Empire.

The oratorio is composed by the Greek‐Dutch composer Calliope Tsoupaki (1963). Fascinated by the Dutch Passion tradition, she has written a new full‐length Passion based on St. Luke’s Gospel, also taking inspiration from her own Greek Orthodox background. Musically she refers back to the 7th and 8th centuries, when early Gregorian chants were blended together with Byzantine melodies in the Eastern Roman Empire. A comparable melting of East and West takes place in Tsoupaki’s Lucas Passion: Palestinian soprano Raneen Hanna sings with tenor Marcel Beekman and Byzantinian singer Ioannis Arvanitis, a Byzantine choir stands next to the Egidius Quartet. The musical accompaniment is provided by the Nieuw Ensemble under direction of Ed Spanjaard.
