Elgar — The Dream of Gerontius

イベント情報

150th Anniversary Celebration of Elgar's Birth Year

Despite its initial failure, Elgar's glorious setting of Cardinal Newman's poem on the flight of a Christian soul to heaven is now recognised as one of his greatest choral works. In Elgar's extraordinary musical vision, Gerontius is very much a man of the world and a sinner, and his music displays, in the composer's words, 'a good, healthy, full‐blooded romantic, remembered worldliness'. In addition to powerfully uplifting choruses such as 'Praise to the Holiest', the score contains substantial solo parts for tenor (representing Gerontius), bass (the Priest) and, unforgettably, the mezzo‐soprano angel who leads Gerontius tenderly on his final journey.
