Mozart’s sparkling Overture, perfectly evoking the energy and comic brilliance of the opera, opens a concert of three very different masterworks. Prize‐winning Georgian pianist Elisso Virsaladze has a special affinity for Mozart’s music and this performance of the C Minor Concerto promises to be an exceptional experience. Yuri Temirkanov also conducts Mahler’s kaleidoscopic Fifth Symphony, its spirited dance movements, fanfares and funereal march tunes jostling to create a vast symphonic canvas. The emotional core of the work is the almost unbearably beautiful Adagietto, poignantly used in Visconti’s film Death in Venice.
