As a religious confession, Anton Bruckner's music was taboo in the Soviet Union. When Valery Gergiev conducts Bruckner's Ninth with his Mariinsky Orchestra, he consciously places himself in this small Leningrad / St. Petersburg Bruckner tradition. This finds in Bruckner's expressionist search for God a bridge to his own orthodox experiences.
