Ibermúsica Presents: Filarmonica Della Scala‐Riccardo Chailly

イベント情報

The Arriaga series offers us a second opportunity to listen to the Filarmonica della Scala and its new musical director, Riccardo Chailly, this time with a programme dedicated to Mahler and his sixth symphony as the main character. Composed between 1903 and 1904 and revised in 1906, this is, in many respects, his most conventional and traditional symphony. And although there is no specific text or storyline in it, many listeners identify it with the representation of the life and death of a prototypical hero, an interpretation that might explain why the name 'Tragic' has remained engraved.

But unlike the classical tragedy, the symphony does not end with a culminating resolution of truth and emotional catharsis. It is, in fact, Mahler's only symphony that does not end in a final declaration of positive transformation and triumph, a fact that led the British conductor Bruno Walter to define it as 'the first nihilistic piece in the history of music'.
