With its elliptical shape that removes the separation of stage and auditorium, the Pierre Boulez Saal is the ideal space to experience the intimate musical atmosphere of the string quartet. At the end of the season, 11 ensembles—veteran quartets as well as artists of the younger generation—come together for a very special concert marathon. From Haydn and Beethoven to Britten and Shostakovich, from Yiddish cabaret songs of the 1920s to works by contemporary composers, the programs collectively reveal the astonishing stylistic and emotional range contained in the interplay of four string instruments.
