Il Tabarro & Gianni Schicchi: Birgitta Festival

Az eseményről

Enjoy Giacomo Puccini’s short operas Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi with the Boris Pokorovsky Moscow Chamber Musical Theater at the Birgitta Festival.

Il Tabarro — opera in one act
A barge‐owner suspects his wife of cheating and, when his suspicions turn out to be true, kills her lover and wraps his body in his own cloak. The opera is far from simplistic straight‐forwardness and excessive emotions. Puccini creates a true musical drama, executing the melodramatic plot with musical means. The composer opens the psychology of his characters deeply and gives a symbolic meaning to details in the surroundings.

Gianni Schicchi — opera in one act
Before his death, the mighty Florentine signore Buoso Donati donated all of his immense wealth to a monastery. The relatives do not want to accept such a decision and hide Donati’s death from the public and remake the will. Gianni agrees to take his place on the deathbed and dictate the will to the summoned notary. However, the crafty Gianni alters the agreements on spot… This seems to be a classic farce on how one fraudster outsmarts another. Yet Puccini depicts his main character with unhidden sympathy, because Gianni acts not for profit, but for the benefit of lovers – his daughter and her bridegroom who is a relative of the deceased.
