Concertgebouw Orchestra: Chailly and Gluzman

A propos du spectacle

Relish the intense colors of Shostakovich and Stravinsky. Riccardo Chailly conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Stravinsky's flamboyant 'Firebird', and renowned violinist Vadim Gluzman plays Shostakovich' Second — and final — Violin Concerto.

Not only the last violin concerto, but also the last concerto written by Shostakovich, the work was composed as a birthday gift for David Oistrakh (perhaps not coincidentally, a countryman of Gluzman's). In the key of C sharp minor — an unusual choice for a violin — the work makes subtle reference to a number of decidedly non‐Soviet approved works, in typically‐Shostakovichian manner. Stravinsky's music for 'The Firebird' marks the beginning of his extraordinary collaboration with Diaghilev, and opened the gates to many of the works we now treasure as a part of the legacy of the Ballets Russes.
