Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique: Concertgebouw Amsterdam

A propos du spectacle

John Eliot Gardiner and his Orchestre Révolutionnaire will perform their 'version' of the famous Symphony fantastique on original historical instruments, that will show why Berlioz toppled the French orchestral world.

The stormy development of the genius Hector Berlioz is closely followed in this programme. In 1829, when the young composer competed for the third time for the Prix de Rome with his astonishingly modern cantata La mort de Cléopâtre, he was rejected the prise. In the following year he writes his Symphony fantastique, a hallucinatory reaction to a madness in love. Another year later he wins this coveted Prix de Rome with a cantata that neatly follows the rules. However, the 'Fantastique' went down in music history as the most important French symphonic creation of the nineteenth century.
