Begun at the height of Stalin's Great Purge, the necessity of landing on the right side of this balancing act must have been particularly acute for Prokofiev, as he wrote his first Violin Sonata. The majority of Gubaidulina's career played out under similar circumstances, and it is only since perestroika that the West has had the pleasure of her unusual instrumental combinations, use of microtones, and mysticism.
