Tosca
APRIL 4, MAY 2, MAY 30, JUNE 27

'Tosca' is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, based on Victorien Sardou’s melodramatic play 'La Tosca' (1887). The plot centers on political and romantic intrigues in Rome in 1800. Despite the fact that several of Puccini’s colleagues advised him against adapting the play, the composer acquired the rights and created an opera that has been an audience favourite since its premiere in Rome in 1900.

'Rigoletto' is a three‐act opera by Guiseppe Verdi. Written in 1851, the plot is based on Victor Gugo’s play 'Le Roi S’amuse'. The play was banned by the censors for its 'immoral character' and undermining of the king’s authority, so Verdi’s opera substituted a libertine duke. 'Rigoletto' is generally counted as the composer’s first operatic masterpiece, and has been a reliable box‐office success since its premiere at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

Madama Butterfly

Puccini wrote his opera after seeing a performance of the one‐act play 'Madame Butterfly' in 1900. The tragic story of the love between a Japanese girl and an American sailor became the passionate and evocative three‐act opera that premiered at Milan’s La Scala Opera Theatre in 1904. Puccini researched Japanese music and the librettist even travelled to Japan to get a feeling for the culture.

The work's premiere at the Opera‐Comique in 1875 attracted controversy, as the public was not accustomed to seeing the life of the lower classes being shown on stage without artifice. However, within 10 years, the tragic and passionate 'Carmen' was recognised for its groundbreaking dramatic and musical choices, and has enjoyed immense popularity ever since.
