Written to impress upon the Viennese the virtuoso talents of a newly‐arrived Beethoven, the Second Piano Concerto is Mozartian in style, but contains numerous hints of the dramatic contrasts that would become the composer's signature. Nowhere is that dramatic style more in evidence than in the Fifth Symphony, the opening of which is perhaps the most famous musical moment the world has ever known.
