Alisa Weilerstein: Elgar's Cello Concerto

Sobre el espectáculo

Indulge in the passionate music and deeply contemplative nature of Elgar's iconic cello concerto. Celebrated around the world, despite her comparative youth, American cellist Alisa Weilerstein plays with the Ulster Orchestra, under the baton of her husband, renowned Venezualan conductor Rafael Payare.

Composed late in Elgar's life, the concerto was not initially an overwhelming success. Popularised by another husband and wife team — Daniel Barenboim and Jacqueline du Pré — in the 1960s, the concerto has since become a central work in the cello repertoire, and Weilerstein's recording — with Barenboim himself — won numerous awards. Shostakovich' First Symphony, by contrast, composed at a mere 19 years of age, has been immensely popular since its inception, and its unexpected depths and unpredictable shits have ensured it retains its place in the symphonic repertoire.
