Wiener Blut: Opera in the Crypt

About the Event

Experience Strauss' masterpiece 'Wiener Blut' as an exciting, captivating play. The internationally renowned artists perform the minimally shortened work without distance directly before and between their audiences.

The ambassador of Reuß-Greiz‐Schleiz, Count Balduin Zedlau, has been staying in Vienna for quite some time and lives there together with his lover, the dancer Franziska Cagliari, in his villa. His actual wife, Countess Gabriele Zedlau — a Viennese by birth — lives separated from him, as her husband's 'Viennese blood' had previously been missing. In the meantime the count has been reeducated to a Viennese Hallodri by his lover and his valet Josef, called Pepi. After the Countess has heard about it, she becomes curious and wants to see the goings‐on of her husband in person. In the suburban villa, the countess is surprised by the Prime Minister Prince Ybbsheim‐Gindelsbach — the head of state of Reuß-Greiz‐Schleiz — who, however, considers her to be the lover of his ambassador and therefore introduces her as his wife.
The old vaults of the crypt provide the ideal setting.
Established as the smallest opera theatre in Austria, the performances in the KRYPTA impress with their intensity, high quality and, of course, the unusual venue. Situated deep below St. Peter's Church in Vienna, the intimate hall offers a personal experience like no other theatre.
The KRYPTA is pleasantly tempered at any time of the year.
