About the Event

Revel in the wonderful classical music masterworks of Beethoven and Bruckner in a breathtaking performance by Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniel Barenboim at Berlin's celebrated Philharmonie Berlin.

The Philharmonie is a concert hall opened in 1963 in West Berlin. It is considered the musical heart of the German capital, as well as the new urban centre after the fall of the infamous Berlin Wall. Its distinctive bright yellow exterior and unusual tent-like shape quickly made it a city landmark. The surprising design and architecture were initially viewed negatively by many, but the Philharmonie is now considered a model for concert halls worldwide. The architect, Hans Scharoun, aimed to design a concert hall in which the focal point - the musicians on the concert platform - is equally visible from every seat, an aim that gave rise to the hall's unusual shape. Since its inauguration, the Berliner Philharmonie has hosted numerous concerts, often featuring acclaimed soloists and conductors.

Artists

  • West-Eastern Divan Orchestra (Orchestra)
For almost 20 years, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, founded by Daniel Barenboim and Edward W. Said, has been known throughout the music world as a global ambassador for cultural understanding. The young artists from Israel, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Iran, and other Middle Eastern and North-African countries bring to the table a willingness not only to engage for the sake of music, but to develop an open ear for the experiences and perspectives of their colleagues, through conversation and discussion.
  • Barenboim, Daniel (Conductor)
Daniel Barenboim’s life is an epic spanning continents featuring a star-studded cast of musical giants and punctuated by remarkable achievements and innumerable awards, accolades, and prizes. Born in Argentina to Russian Jewish parents, Barenboim’s career started behind the piano with an international debut in Vienna and Rome in 1952 before moving towards conducting and musical direction—his current forte. Barenboim is currently head of the Berlin State Opera, and the Staatskapelle Berlin, ensembles he has stamped with his distinctive personal tastes and approach. In 1999, Maestro Barenboim and Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said established the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which brings together young musicians from Israel, Palestine, and other Arab and North-African countries and tours internationally every summer.
  • Mutter, Anne-Sophie (Violin)
Anne-Sophie Mutter was born in Rheinfelden in Baden. She embarked on her international career as a soloist in 1976 at the Lucerne Festival and a year later made her Salzburg debut at the Whitsun Concerts under Herbert von Karajan.

Ever since then she has been in equal demand as a soloist and chamber musician, and has given concerts in all the major music centres of Europe, North America and Asia. Since her debut with Deutsche Grammophon at the age of 14, she has received innumerable prizes for her recordings. The violinist has also committed herself to alleviating the medical and social problems of our times and gives regular benefit concerts to this end.

She has been the recipient of numerous important honours and distinctions, including the Order of the Republic of Germany (first class), the Bavarian Order of Merit, the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit and the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art. In 2002 she was awarded the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art and the Munich Cultural Prize of Honour; and in 2005 she was made an 'Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres'.
  • Ma, Yo-Yo (Cello)
