Vivaldi's Juditha Triumphans: Théâtre des Champs‐Elysées
About the Event
Let the Baroque experts of The Ensemble Matheus introduce you to Antonio Vivaldi's only surviving oratorio, at the Théâtre des Champs‐Elysées.
'Juditha Triumphans' was commissioned to commemorate the victory of the Republic of Venice over the Turks during the siege of Corfu. Based on a libretto by Iacopo Cassetti, Vivaldi's work tells the story of Judith's victory over the Assyrian general Holofernes, who laid siege to the Israeli town of Bethulia.
The oratorio was first performed at the Ospedale della Pieta, a girl's orphanage, at which Vivaldi taught music.
Concert version sung in Latin, with French and English surtitles.
