Vivaldi's Juditha Triumphans: Theater an der Wien

About the Event

Let the Baroque experts of The King's Consort introduce you to Antonio Vivaldi's only surviving oratorio, at the Theater an der Wien.

"Juditha Triumphans" was commissioned to commemorate the victory of the Republic of Venice over the Turks during the siege of Corfu. Based on a libretto by Iacopo Cassetti, Vivaldi's work tells the story of Judith's victory over the Assyrian general Holofernes, who laid siege to the Israeli town of Bethulia.

The oratorio was first performed at the Ospedale della Pieta, a girl's orphanage, at which Vivaldi taught music.

Concert version sung in Italian.
