Vasco Da Gama: Deutsche Oper Berlin

About the Event

"Vasco Da Gama" (originally titled "L'Africaine") was the last of Meyerbeer's operas. This new production directed by Vera Nemirova, one of today's most accomplished musical theater directors, begins a cycle of Meyerbeer's major operas at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Meyerbeer uses the tools afforded by grand opéra to show individual happiness being dashed on the rocks of social and religious notions. The central character in "Vasco" is not the Portuguese explorer, but the Indian Queen, Selica. She is the only figure who is not hostile or prejudiced towards people from different countries and religions, and she becomes a victim of her unrequited love for Vasco.

Sung in French, with English and German surtitles.
