Tosca at Oper Leipzig

About the Event

Discover one of Giacomo Puccini's best‐known works. Tosca, one of the works where illusions are most cruelly shattered by reality, deceptions, desires and betrayals are mixed in a dark Rome between emotions and longings.

No other opera is so anchored in the annals of time as Puccini's Tosca. Her doses of passion, hatred and blood, together with the torrid love of the couple and the melodic display and overwhelming beauty of her songs, make her one of the peaks of the verista movement.

The action takes place in Rome at the end of the 18th century, where spiritual and secular powers meet. It is a shocking power game between the state of the church and the state of the police, so to speak. The drama takes place in architecturally inhospitable places that are still the attractions of the Eternal City today: the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle, the Palazzo Farnese, and the Castel Sant'Angelo. Within these walls, Puccini goes deeper and deeper into the depths of realism, leading its protagonists into ever more acute situations. With great pathos, Puccini plays perfectly with the spectrum of emotions, allowing the listener to sympathize with Tosca, the famous diva of opera, whose love for Cavaradossi is condemned for the political drama that surrounds him.
