The Rake's Progress: Festival d'Aix‐en‐Provence

About the Event

Discover Igor Stravinsky's opera about the dissolute life of a libertine in eighteenth century England, in a production by contemporary playwright Simon McBurney and under the musical direction of Daniel Harding.

Stravinsky found inspiration for this opera about the story of Tom Rakewell and his damned soul, the Mephistophelian figure of Nick Shadow, in a series of paintings by the English painter William Hogarth. His music, which evokes the memory of Mozart, also borrows from Rossini, Verdi and Handel, in a true musical cubism of the greatest originality and acerbity.

In English, with French and English surtitles.
