The Phantom of the Opera: Opera Australia
About the Event
The Phantom of the Opera is a grand story of the power of art and the hunger for love. Andrew Lloyd Webber's devastating music has made it the most popular musical in the world.
Strange things and accidents are happening at the Opera in Paris. Christine, a young singer, ends up in a major role. But who will win her heart: her childhood friend Raoul or the mysterious masked man lurking in the vaults of the Opera House?
First staged in 1986, it has had more than 140 million viewers in 30 countries, and there is no end in sight. Most performances of Phantom around the world are replicas of the original London production, but the Finnish National Opera was granted the rare privilege of creating a completely new production, which will be premiered on 4 September 2015. Tiina Puumalainen, veteran director of numerous musicals and the opera The Purge at the Finnish National Opera, will be spearheading a lavish staging where the modern technology of the Opera House will allow all the stops to be pulled out.
