The New Passion with the Concertgebouw Orchestra

About the Event

Delve into the Passion story from a variety of unusual perspectives. The Concertgebouw Orchestra has commissioned two new works approaching the subject, and presents those with Debussy's music for the mystery play Le martyre de Saint‐Sébastien, which itself combines Christianity with the cult of Adonis.

The Azerbaijani Franghiz Ali‐Zadeh takes his inspiration from the 14th Century metaphysical & mystical poetry of Nasimi Imadeddin. Deeply influenced by the Ḥurūfī movement, in Imadeen's work, God is at the center of creation, shedding His light on the world. Serbian Djuro Živković bases his work on the Orthodox Easter liturgy, which has redemption and forgiveness as its central tenets.
