The Metropolitan Opera: Orfeo ed Euridice (Gluck)

About the Event

Discover how far you'd go for love as the tale of Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice plays out in this classic opera at New York's magnificent Metropolitan Opera. Star mezzosoprano Jamie Barton sings the role of the tormented musician.

One of the great love stories of classical mythology, this story of love reclaimed from Death's clutches, only to be lost again in a moment of human frailty, has been set by numerous composers through the ages. Gluck's setting remains one of the most popular, and was revolutionary in its time, seamlessly blending music, poetry and dance in defiance of the formulaic structure previously synonymous with opera as an art form.

Celebrated director, dancer and choreographer, Mark Morris has created a production that effortlessly fuses the work's Baroque roots with a modern aesthetic. In doing so, he echoes the Metropolitan Opera itself — a temple to a classical art that nonetheless embraces modernity in its extraordinary stage technology and memorable 'sputnik' light fittings!
